ST. SIMONS ISLAND, Ga. – The Kentucky men’s golf team played some great golf on the second day at the Southeastern Conference Championship, but came up just short of continuing on to match play at the Seaside Course at storied Sea Island Golf Club. The Wildcats finished in 11th place at 17-over par, but pieced together the fourth-best score of the day at 4-under par.
What head coach Brian Craig is saying:
“We showed great heart today, especially by our lone senior and team co-captain Stephen Stallings. At one point on the back nine, Stephen made five straight birdies to get us on the edge of making match play. In the end, we simply ran out of holes. I firmly believe we would have made match play if we had had a little more golf to play. Our slow start in the first round was too much to overcome, but we gave it a valiant effort.”
About the lineup:
Junior Tyler “Chip” McDaniel was the high finisher for the Wildcats, as he was last season. McDaniel had a rough start through his first nine on Saturday but finished with two birdies at the final two holes to ultimately shoot 1-over par. The junior finished tied for 18th at 2-over par.
Cooper Musselman bettered his finish from a year ago. The junior from Louisville, Kentucky, jumped two spots his placement from the 2016 SEC Championship, tying for 23rd (+3) this season. Musselman started off strong on the back nine with two birdies at the par-4 10th and 11th holes, which led to a 1-under finish on the side. He nabbed another birdie at the third hole and went on to shoot even-par 70 for the final round.
After an even-par showing on Saturday, Fred Allen Meyer tied for 33rd place at 5-over par – his seventh appearance in the top-40 individuals this season. The sophomore had a couple of slipups on the last few holes of his front nine but showed his resilience for a bogey-free, 1-under back nine.
Stephen Stallings played the back nine, where he started his round, at 2-over par. He even triple bogeyed the last hole on the side. When he made the turn, the senior bogeyed the first hole before birdieing six of the next seven holes to shoot 4-under par on the side and 2-under for the whole round. Stallings’ 68 is his first sub-70 round of the season. He finished tied for 50th place overall at 10-over par.
Lukas Euler rebounded from his first two rounds with a 68, 2-under par round. This is Euler’s best score since the first round of the Steelwood Intercollegiate back in October when he shot a 3-under par 69. The sophomore from Germany came out with a solid even-par performance through his first nine and birdied two of his last three holes to get back in red numbers.
The Tournament Field:
No. 3 Vanderbilt leads the field heading into match play at 11-under par. No. 15 Texas A&M and No. 7 LSU hold second and third places at 5- and 3-under par, respectively. No. 6 Florida is in fourth place while the next closest is No. 30 South Carolina at 5-over par.
