LEXINGTON, Ky. — Kentucky sophomore right-hander Trevor Gott has been named to the midseason watch list for the eighth annual National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association Stopper of the Year Award, given to the top reliever in college baseball, it was announced by the NCBWA on Thursday afternoon.
A native of Lexington, Ky., Gott is one of the top 45 relievers in college baseball named to the midseason watch list. Already sitting in a tie for the most single-season saves in UK baseball history, Gott has eight saves in 15 relief outings. The Tates Creek product has tossed 13.1 innings, allowing only eight hits and four walks, striking out 21 and holding hitters to a .167 average.
The 2011 Cape Cod League Reliever of the Year, Gott has a 1-0 record and a 1.35 ERA, converting eight of his nine save chances. He has the most saves in a season since Paul Morse in 1992, with his next save giving Gott sole possession of the school record. In his two-year career, Gott owns 10 saves, the seventh-most saves in UK career history.
Gott is one of eight Southeastern Conference relievers on the list, including San Diego’s Michael Wagner, who leads the nation with 18 saves. Gott is the first UK reliever to appear on the midseason NCBWA Stopper of the Year list since Matt Little got off to a hot start in non-league action as UK’s closer in 2010.
A 6-foot, 190-pounder, Gott has been most effective in conference play, saving five games in five chances. Gott has tossed six hitless innings in SEC action in 2012, allowing only one walk in his six outings. In a doubleheader sweep at No. 9 Arkansas last weekend, the first doubleheader sweep allowed by Arkansas since 1999, Gott recorded his first four-out save of the year. Through the first half of the year, Gott ranks tied for third in the league in saves.
In his career, Gott – the 2010 Gatorade Kentucky High School Player of the year – has appeared in 38 games in relief, with a 2.88 ERA and a 3-4 record, striking out 55 in 40.2 innings. During the summer Gott dominated as the top reliever in the Cape Cod League, saving the CCBL All-Star Game at Fenway Park and becoming the first CCBL Reliever of the Year for UK since 1992. During the summer, Gott saved 13 games in 13 chances, posing a 1.29 ERA in 18 relief outings.
No. 2 Kentucky (33-5, 11-4 SEC) hosts No. 1 LSU (31-7, 11-4 SEC) in a monumental matchup at Cliff Hagan Stadium, starting Friday at 6:30 p.m. ET. The game will be televised live on the UK IMG Network, available live on CWKYT-TV in Central Kentucky and on WYMO-TV in Louisville, in addition to a delayed telecast on Fox Sports South, due to the Nashville Predators hockey contest.
