LEXINGTON, Ky. – The University of Kentucky women’s soccer team continues its prolific effort to give back to the Lexington community by announcing the continuation of the “Kick Cancer” match for the 2012 season, which has been scheduled for Sunday, Sept. 16. All of the proceeds for the event will go towards helping to fight the battle against pediatric cancer.

“We have done a lot of things in the community, but I think the one thing that we do every year that is now part of who we are is continuing to support the fight against cancer,” UK head coach Jon Lipsitz said.

Fans are invited to come to the UK Soccer Complex on Sept. 16, as Kentucky will square off against Mississippi State on SEC opening weekend. The Wildcats will be wearing specialized gold jerseys for pediatric cancer as well as holding an auction during the game for the game-worn jerseys. The money raised from the auction will be donated by the UK women’s soccer program to the University of Kentucky hospital pediatric unit. The UK sports turf crew will also paint two yellow ribbons on the UK Soccer Complex’s playing surface.

“I know a lot of people do stuff that is specifically pink, but we have decided to do something that is specifically for children,” Lipsitz said.

Just as in 2011, UK will also hold a postgame celebration for those fighting cancer, which will include the laying of flowers on the goal line and Lipsitz addressing the crowd.

In the Kick Cancer match from 2011, the women’s soccer program raised over $2,400 for UK Healthcare Pediatrics cancer awareness.

“We look forward to going over to the hospital and donating all of our money, and while we understand the soccer game is very important to us, there are things that are much more important in life.” Lipsitz said.

Kickoff is slated for 1:00 p.m. ET on Sept. 16.
