LEXINGTON, Ky. – Former Kentucky track and field student-athlete Chase Madison finished 12th in the men’s discus finals Thursday at the U.S. Olympic Trials at Hayward Field, in Eugene, Ore.
Madison, who qualified for the finals with a 10th-place showing in the qualifying round Monday, finished 12th in the finals on Thursday with a mark of 54.49m/178-09.
Madison currently holds the third-best discus mark in UK history. The Newton, Iowa, native threw 62.83m/206-02 in Chula Vista, Calif., in 2008.
Also competing on the University of Oregon campus Thursday was Ashley Muffet-Duncan, the top shot put thrower in Kentuck track and field history. Muffet-Duncan finished 19th in the shot put qualifying round with a mark of 15.82m/51-11.
Sharif Webb, who ran the fastest 800m time in UK history at the Florida Relays in 2011, qualified for the 800m semifinals on June 22 with a time of 1:47.86 in the first round. In the semifinals the next day, Webb finished fourth in his heat, and 12th overall, with a time of 1:47.95.
Also on June 22, Mary Angell finished 12th in the qualifying round of the women’s discus, recording a mark of 53.93m/176-11.
Former Kentucky track and field student-athletes Andy Fryman and Kristin Smith got the U.S. Track & Field Olympic Trials started on June 21, competing in the men’s and women’s hammer throw, respectively. The day was declared “Hammertime” to help promote the event at the start of the trials.
Fryman, the 2006 Southeastern Conference outdoor shot put champion, finished sixth in the men’s hammer with a mark of 72.63m/238-3. Fryman, who competed in the trials for the Mjolnir Throwers Club, holds the second-best mark in Kentucky history in the hammer, throwing 66.04m/216-08 in 2008 at the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Des Moines, Iowa.
On the women’s side, Smith, competing for Throw1Deep Club, finished 12th with a mark of 65.58m/215-02. Smith, the Kentucky hammer throw record holder, was the only former SEC athlete competing in the women’s hammer throw at the U.S. Olympic Trials. Smith’s top mark while at Kentucky was 63.57m/208-07, which she threw in 2010 at the Jesse Owens Track Classic in Columbus, Ohio.
