LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky swimmer Tyler Reed swam a 50.18 in the finals of the 100-freestyle, finishing fifth overall in the nation, second among all American swimmers and clinching a spot on the 2013 World University Games team.
As the second-highest finishing American in the field, Reed secures himself a spot on Team USA in the 2013 World University Games next summer as an individual in the 100-free, as well as the 4×100 relay team. The University Games will be contested in Kazan, Russia next summer from July 6-17, 2013.
Reed entered the night session’s final as the No. 6 seed, swimming a time of 50.22 in the morning prelims. All of the races that are contested in the 2012 USA Swimming U.S. Open are in the long-course format, meaning one length of the pool represents 50 meters.
The U.S. Open for USA Swimming will continue this week at the Indiana University Natatorium in Indianapolis, Ind., from Aug. 7-11. Coverage of the meet can be found at usaswimming.com.
