BIRMINGHAM, Ala. – Junior Alexandra Morgan has been named the Southeastern Conference Defensive Player of the Week it was announced on Monday afternoon by the league office. The honor is the first of the Birmingham, Ala., native’s career.
Morgan earned Kentucky Classic All-Tournament team honors after registering an SEC-leading 16 blocks for an average of 1.33 rejections per set. She also contributed 2.08 kills per frame on a squad-high .388 hitting percentage.
The junior middle blocker helped pave the way defensively for the Wildcats as UK limited its opponents to a mere .120 attacking clip. As a unit the squad averaged a conference-best 3.46 blocks per set as Morgan led three players with more than one block a set.
UK finished the weekend with an unblemished 3-0 mark which included victories over North Carolina and Long Beach State who began the season on the cusp of the AVCA coaches poll.
Morgan’s honor is the first of her career, and is the first honor of the season for the Wildcats. UK returns to action on Wednesday at 7 p.m. ET. The Blue and White will take on Louisville in the KFC Yum! Center which is the host site of the 2012 NCAA Volleyball Championship.
