No. 22 Kentucky Splits Doubleheader in Baton Rouge

BATON ROUGE, La. – No. 22 Kentucky (16-11, 5-8 SEC) split a doubleheader at the LSU Tennis Complex on Friday, defeating Nicholls (4-13, 0-4 SLC), 4-0, before falling to No. 5 LSU (24-5, 10-4 SEC), 4-1.

In the first match, Kentucky raced out to the doubles win over the Colonels with identical 6-3 wins on courts one and two from No. 16 Jack Loutit and Eli Stepenson and Martin Breysach and Jaden Weekes.

In singles, the Cats continued to roll, sealing the match victory in less than 90 minutes. Breysach added a second point with a 6-2, 6-1 win on court six. No. 80 Nicolas Arseneault finished off a 6-3, 6-0 win on the top court to make the match 3-0. Matt Rankin clinched the sweep with a 6-1, 6-1 victory on court five.

In the second match of the day, the Wildcats struggled to find momentum against the fifth-ranked Tigers. Erik Arutiunian and Matias Ponce de Leon handed Breysach and Weekes their first loss in five matches as a pairing with a 6-2 match on court two. No. 13 Sasa Markovic and Andrej Loncarevic clinched the opening point with a tight, 6-4 win over No. 16 Loutit and Stephenson.

In singles, LSU continued its momentum with four first set victories. No. 38 Olef Pieczkowski gave LSU a 2-0 lead with a 6-2, 6-1 win over No. 20 Stephenson on court one.

No. 80 Nicolas Arseneault earned Kentucky’s only point of the match with his third top 25 win of the season, earning an impressive win over No. 22 Arutiunian, 7-6 (4), 6-1.

The Tigers clamed a 3-1 lead with a win on court five. Ponce de Leon won 11 of the final 13 games to defeat Mikael Arseneault 6-3, 6-2 and Enzo Kohlmann.

LSU clinched the victory on court three, as No. 120 Lonvarevic defeated No. 78 Loutit in straight sets, 6-1, 6-4.

The Wildcats will close out the regular season at No. 25 Ole Miss at 1 p.m. ET on Sunday, April 12.
