LEXINGTON, Ky. – The Kentucky Wildcats (8-10, 0-9 SEC) fell 6-1 to No. 5 Texas A&M (15-3, 7-1 SEC) in College Station this afternoon. Julia Zhu highlighted the Wildcats play with a solid ranked singles victory on court two over No. 31 Mia Kupres.
The Aggies secured the early momentum by taking the doubles point with wins on courts two and three. The No. 75-ranked Texas A&M duo of Violeta Martinez and Ilinca Amariei defeated Marina Fuduric and Zoe Hammond, 6-3, on court two to put the first match on the board. Shortly after, Lexington Reed and Daria Smetannikov clinched the doubles point with a 6-4 win over Donna Le Roux and Julia Zhu on court three.
The top court matchup featuring Kentucky’s Asuncion Jadue and Reese Sager against the No. 8-ranked pair of Mia Kupres and Lucciana Perez remained unfinished at 5-4, with the Wildcats leading the ranked pair when play was halted.
In singles play, Texas A&M extended its lead with straight set wins on courts one and six. No. 2-ranked Lucciana Perez defeated Zoe Hammond, while Daria Smetannikov added another point with a win over Donna Le Roux.
Kentucky responded to a strong performance from Julia Zhu at the No. 2 spot. Zhu battled back after dropping the first set to defeat No. 31 Mia Kupres in a three-set thriller, clinching the match with a 10-6 decision in the final-set tiebreak. This marked the second ranked win this weekend over a ranked singles opponent for the Wildcats, as Hammond defeated No. 1 Herea of Texas on Friday.
Several other courts featured tightly contested battles. Reese Sager pushed No. 54 Ilinca Amariei to three sets, falling in a pair of tiebreaks, while Elena Molla picked up a first set win before Lexington Reed rallied to take the match. Asuncion Jadue also forced a third set but came up short against No. 96 Violeta Martinez.
Despite the setback, the Wildcats showed resilience across the lineup, with multiple matches going the distance against a ranked Texas A&M squad. Kentucky will look to bounce back as SEC play continues next Friday and Sunday in Lexington.
