Cameron Phillips Remains in Top 10 at Linger Longer Invitational
EATONTON, Ga. – Cameron Phillips continues to pace the Kentucky men’s golf team through 36 holes at the Linger Longer Invitational, with the freshman in sixth at 6-under par as round two concluded at Great Waters Course at Reynolds Lake Oconee (par 72, 7436 yards) on Saturday. The Cats finished 3-over as a team in round two and are in eighth in the 18-team field with the final round still to play.
Phillips, who made a stunning eight birdies in the opening round on Friday, added four more birdies in round two. The freshman went out in 2-under par on the front nine and held steady with an even par back nine to post the best score of the day for the Wildcats. He is just five shots off the individual leader, Grayson Wood of Georgia, as the attention turns to Sunday. The Portsmouth, Ohio native is 3-under par on par 3s for the tournament, tied for the best mark in the field.
Senior Jack Schoenberger carded five birdies in his second round on his way to a 73 (+1), putting him in a tie for 24th at 1-under par on the tournament. Schoenberger’s round was hampered by back-to-back double bogeys on No. 9 and No. 10 after he started the day 3-under par through his first five holes.
Sophomore Jacob Settles turned in a 73 on Saturday and was hot early, firing a 33 (-3) on the front nine before a triple-bogey on No. 13 stalled the momentum. The Winchester, Kentucky native still improved by three shots from his round one score and is now tied for 71st at 5-over par total.
Cole Stockard was the final counting score for UK on Saturday, signing for a 3-over par, 75, he is tied for 38th at 1-over in a field of 108 golfers. Also tied for 38th is sophomore Gavin Clutts, competing as an individual this week. Clutts was 1-over in round two with two birdies and three bogeys on his scorecard.
Kentucky’s other individual competitor, Luke Coyle, also delivered a 1-over second round of 73 which featured a 35 on the back nine, the best score of the day by a Wildcat on Great Waters Course’s homeward half.
The Wildcats are 5-under as a team and just four shots outside the top five heading into the final round. Round three will be played on Sunday with tee times off No. 1 and No. 10 beginning at 8:30 a.m.
