Kentucky Women’s Golf Takes On Valspar Augusta Invitational for the First Time
AUGUSTA, Ga. – The University of Kentucky women’s golf team will compete in its fourth tournament of the regular season this weekend at the Valspar Augusta Invitational in Forest Acres Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia. It is the program’s first time at this event.
The Wildcats will play 36 holes in a shotgun format on Saturday beginning at 8:30 a.m. ET, paired with Augusta, Indiana and Minnesota. They’ll play the final round in a shotgun format on Sunday.
The field features 17 teams, including host Augusta, Coastal Carolina, Columbia, Daytona State College, Furman, Georgia Southern, Georgia State, Illinois State, Indiana, Kentucky, Minnesota, Missouri, Northern Illinois, North Florida, Western Kentucky, Xavier and Yale.
UK has faced just three of those opponents thus far this season – Furman (1-0), Indiana (1-1), Missouri (0-1) – owning a 2-2 record against the familiar foes.
Kentucky will play the same five it has rolled with for most of the season, including Cathryn Brown, Raleygh Simpson, Anastasia Hekkonen, Karlie Campbell and C.A. Carter. This particular lineup has three finishes inside the top three, including two in the fall and one in the spring.
They’re coming off a strong finish to the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate last week, going 1-under-par 284 in the final round in Hilton Head Island.
The Wildcats have had three different leading scorers through three events this spring, including Hekkonen leading after the first event (Paradise Invitational), Brown leading after the second event (Spartan Sun Coast Invitational) and Campbell leading after the third event (Darius Rucker Intercollegiate).
Ironically, those same three players – and in that exact order – were the leading scorers through the first three events in the fall, too.
UK has a 292.4 stroke average through seven events this year. If the season ended today, it would be the sixth-best stroke average in program history.
Big Blue Nation can expect sunny skies and temperatures in the upper-70s on Saturday, followed by a chance of showers on Sunday.
