'Accurate' Minchey Impressing Early in Spring Drills

by Tim Letcher

Following Thursday’s Kentucky football spring practice, offense was the topic of the day. And specifically, transfer quarterback Kenny Minchey.

Offensive coordinator Joe Sloan was first to the podium and he brought up a word that would be said numerous times when talking about Minchey – accuracy.

“I think he’s had a really good two days (of practice),” Sloan said of Minchey. “We saw his accuracy on tape, and he’s extremely accurate. He always has a base. He’s got a great demeanor. He’s been able to really handle everything from an intellectual standpoint, from a read standpoint, pre-snap, some different checks, things like that.”

When asked what stood out about his game, Minchey had a similar answer.

“I’d like to say I’m pretty accurate,” Minchey said. “That’s probably my main strength. Then, decision making, which is something I obviously try to work on every single day. I feel like I’m, for the most part, pretty smart with the football.”

Wide receiver Nic Anderson gets a look at Minchey’s accuracy up close and personal every day.

“Oh yeah. Me, especially, I’m the one catching for him,” Anderson said. “He’s always putting that ball in the right spot. If he misses, I’ll let you know.”

Anderson likes the experience that Minchey brings to the Kentucky roster.

“Kenny’s great. He’s been in college for a minute, so he knows what he’s talking about,” Anderson said. “He’s had a lot of experience, especially at Notre Dame, a great program.”

Sloan knows that Minchey turned out to be exactly the guy the UK coaches saw on tape and more.

“Everything that we thought, that showed up,” Sloan said. “Really, not just these first couple of days but also these first couple of months. I couldn’t be more pleased with him. He’s a lot of fun to work with. I think he’s going to be great around the guys and he seems to be really excited to be here.”

When he was in the transfer portal and looking for a new school, Minchey liked what he saw from the new Kentucky coaching staff.
“I think it was mainly the coaches,” Minchey said. “Guys like Sloan, (Head Coach Will) Stein, in terms of quarterbacks they’ve coached, quarterback development.”

Accuracy was the word of the day following Thursday’s practice and Minchey embodies that word already, even though the Cats are only two practices into spring ball.
