Men’s Golf Musters 1-Over Par in First Round of Spring

PANAMA CITY, Fla. – The Kentucky men’s golf team began its spring campaign with a 1-over par opening round at the Watersound Invitational on Monday, placing the Cats in a tie for seventh place at Watersound Club’s Third Course (par 70, 7209 yards).

The Wildcats sit firmly in the middle of a strong, 12-team field, just four shots outside of the top five through 18 holes of play. Arkansas leads the pack at 11-under par with 36 holes remaining.

Three Cats are inside the top 13 on the leaderboard, led by freshman Cameron Phillips who carded a career-best score of 67 (-3), leaving the Portsmouth, Ohio native tied for sixth among the 78 players. Senior captain Jack Schoenberger, along with sophomore Jacob Lang, are tied for 13th at 2-under par.

Phillips, who is playing as an individual this week and thus did not count toward the team total, made four birdies and an eagle on his day. Starting his day on the 12th hole, Phillips did most of his damage on holes No. 5 through No. 9, recording an eagle on No. 5 (par 5, 603 yards) followed by birdies on No. 6 (par 3, 161 yards), No. 8 (par 3, 174 yards) and No. 9 (par 5, 615 yards). In all, Phillips was 3-under par on the five par 3s, the best mark in the field on day one.

Schoenberger and Lang each played steady golf, as both golfers made three birdies to just one bogey to finish in 2-under. All three of Schoenberger’s birdies came on par 5s, while Lang capitalized on No. 8 (par 3, 174 yards), No. 10 (par 4, 404 yards) and No. 17 (par 4, 379 yards).

Jacob Settles managed to finish in 1-over par, 71, despite a pair of double-bogeys on his day. The sophomore made four birdies in all, including three on par 5s, one of which was on his final hole of the round, No. 15 (par 5, 577 yards). He finds himself in a tie for 38th.

Freshman Cole Stockard was Kentucky’s final counting score at 4-over par (T65), while junior Luke Coyle ended the day at 7-over (T74).

Kentucky will return for round two tomorrow, with proceedings set to begin once again with an 11 a.m. ET shotgun start. UK will be paired with Mississippi State, Navy and TCU.
