No. 11 Kentucky Falls to Georgia on Saturday
Asia Boone and Amelia Hassett each scored 15 points, but No. 11 Kentucky lost to Georgia 72-67 on Saturday inside Historic Memorial Coliseum.
Jordan Obi had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Cats, while Tonie Morgan had 10 points and 12 assists.
Georgia scored the first nine points of the game before Morgan got the Cats on the board with a layup. After two Georgia free throws, UK got two baskets from Obi and a three from Boone to cut the deficit to 11-9.
Georgia scored again before Boone hit another three, cutting the gap to 13-12. However, the Lady Bulldogs scored the final eight points of the quarter and Georgia led 21-12 after 10 minutes of play.
The Lady Bulldogs scored first in the second quarter before Kentucky got a basket from Clara Strack, two free throws from Morgan and an Obi layup to cut the deficit to 24-18. Georgia hit two free throws to extend the lead to eight.
Kaelyn Carroll hit a three, but Georgia responded with a bucket to make it 28-21. UK got within four on an Obi free throw and a Strack basket, but the Lady Bulldogs closed the half on a 6-2 run and Georgia led 34-26 at the half.
Kentucky started the third quarter with threes from Amelia Hassett and Boone, cutting the Georgia lead to two, 34-32. After two Georgia free throws, Strack and Morgan scored to tie the game at 36-36. However, the Lady Bulldogs hit a three to take the lead back.
Boone answered with a three, then Carroll followed suit and Kentucky led 42-39. Georgia responded by scoring the next seven points, taking a 46-42 lead in the process. Hassett hit a three to get UK within one, but the Lady Bulldogs hit a three of their own to lead 49-45. Boone hit a three to get the Cats within one, but Georgia responded with another three to lead 52-48. An Obi layup at the buzzer got UK within two, 52-50.
Georgia scored first in the final stanza before Morgan cut it to 54-52. The Lady Bulldogs scored four in a row before Obi scored to cut the deficit to four. Kentucky would continue to fight back, but the Cats would get no closer than three, which happened with eight seconds remaining.
Kentucky returns to action on Feb. 1, visiting Arkansas in Fayetteville. Tipoff is set for 2 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on the SEC Network.
