Seth McGowan Adds Another National Weekly Honor
Kentucky senior running back Seth McGowan has earned honorable mention Player of the Week by the Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award, it was announced Tuesday. It is the second consecutive week he’s garnered the honor and third time this season.
McGowan rushed for 72 yards and three first half touchdowns, becoming the first UK player to do that since quarterback Will Levis at Louisville in 2021. He previously earned the same weekly distinction after running over Florida on November 8 and carving up Eastern Michigan earlier this season.
This is the second time this season he has had three rushing touchdowns (also vs. Eastern Michigan). He is the first UK player with two games of three rushing TDs in the same season since Benny Snell in 2017.
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is presented annually to the nation’s most outstanding Division I offensive player who graduated from a Texas high school or plays at a four-year college in Texas. McGowan is a native of Mesquite, Texas, where he was a standout at Poteet High School.
Each week during the regular season, an Earl Campbell Tyler Rose National Player of the Week will be selected leading up to announcing the 16 semifinalists in November and up to five finalists in December. The recipient of the award will be announced in January.
McGowan rushed 17 times for 72 yards and three scores in the Tennessee Tech victory while also catching a pair of passes for 10 yards.
Despite missing one game due to injury, McGowan leads the Cats with 693 rushing yards and 12 rushing touchdowns on 153 carries this season, averaging 77.0 rushing yards per game. He also has caught 16 passes for 112 yards out of the backfield.
He currently ranks sixth in the SEC in rushing yards per game (77.0) and is 13th nationally and third in the league in rushing TDs (12).
The Earl Campbell Tyler Rose Award is named in honor of Earl Campbell, who graduated from John Tyler High School in Tyler, Texas, before playing at Texas. In his senior season, Campbell led the nation with 1,744 rushing yards and 19 touchdowns, becoming Texas’ first Heisman Trophy winner. He was drafted by the Houston Oilers, where he earned Rookie of the Year honors in 1978 and went on to lead the NFL in rushing three times. Campbell earned NFL MVP in 1979 and was elected to the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 1991.
The Wildcats (5-5, 2-5 SEC) travel to No. 12/13 Vanderbilt on Saturday. Kickoff is set for 3:30 p.m. ET/2:30 p.m. CT on ESPN.
