Kentucky Men’s Golf Concludes Bearcat Invitational
CINCINNATI – Cole Stockard and Luke Coyle both shot under par as Kentucky men’s golf rose two spots on the leaderboard Tuesday to finish ninth at the Bearcat Invitational, hosted by the University of Cincinnati at Coldstream Country Club (par 71, 7279 yards).
The Wildcats were 1-over par as a team for the final round to finish 7-over on the tournament, putting them right in the middle of the 18-team field. The hosts, Cincinnati, won their home event in runaway fashion at 18-under par total.
“Obviously disappointed in our week,” head coach Gator Todd said. “We got off to a tough start and were behind right out of the gate. We still had an opportunity to squeeze out a top five finish but didn’t quite finish it off today. The course forces you to be on the correct side of the hole and we made too many errors on the wrong side. We have a lot of work to do to get where we want to go, but I believe in this team and know our best stuff is ahead of us.”
Stockard, a freshman, was bogey free on Tuesday, carding a new career-best of 69 (-2). It was Stockard’s second under-par effort of the tournament, allowing the native of Dalton, Ga. to tie for 26th in the field at 1-over par total.
Coyle, who fired a 1-under round of 70 in the final round, also tied for 26th for the tournament, as did sophomore Jacob Lang after a final round 74 (+3). Lang led Kentucky with 10 birdies on the week, two of which came in the final round.
Senior captain Jack Schoenberger ended the week with a 3-over round of 74 to finish T-60 at 7-over par.
Freshman Charles Cauthen had his best round of the week on Tuesday, finishing in 1-over par 72, the team’s third-best score of the day. Cauthen was 11-over par on the tournament, tying for 75th among the 96 players.
Cameron Phillips, an individual competitor for the Cats, placed 95th at 19-over par. The freshman made eight birdies across 54 holes.
Furman’s Harris Barth took home the individual title at 9-under par.
Kentucky will return to action at its home event, The Cullan Brown Collegiate, Oct. 6-7 at Lexington Country Club.
