Sophia Mattice Signs with Angel City FC
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Former Kentucky women’s soccer player Sophia Mattice signed her first professional deal on Friday, joining National Women’s Soccer League club Angel City FC on a short-term contract.
Mattice has been moved to the active roster ahead of Angel City’s clash with NorCal rival Bay FC on Saturday, May 17. Mattice has been training with the club since the 2025 Coachella Valley Invitational preseason tournament in February.
In her lone season as a Wildcat, Mattice started in all 18 matches that she appeared in, tallying career-high marks with 28 shots, including 12 on goal. Mattice tallied two goals and one assist in 2025, highlighted by a season-best three point performance (1 goal, 1 assist) in a 4-0 victory over Tennessee.
Mattice also delivered one of the biggest moments in program history in the First Round of the 2024 NCAA Tournament. The graduate student clinched the Wildcats’ first postseason advancement in a decade by sinking the winning penalty kick to defeat West Virginia in a shootout at the Bell. Mattice’s kick was the pinnacle of a Wildcat resurgence that she helped orchestrate, with the Cats earning a No. 5 seed in the NCAA Tournament—their first appearance since 2014—winning double digit matches for the first time in a decade, notching a top-ten victory for the second consecutive season, and finishing the season without losing a game at home.
Prior to her time at Kentucky, Mattice spent four season at Portland where she was an All-WCC Freshman Team member in 2020, an All-WCC Honorable Mention in 2022, and recorded five goals and ten assists.
