UK Track and Field Travels to Gainesville for Tom Jones Memorial Invite

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Following a week with no competitions, the Kentucky Wildcats track and field team is set to travel to Gainesville, Fla. for the annual Tom Jones Memorial Invite on Apr. 18-19 at James G. Pressly Stadium on the campus of the University of Florida.

The Wildcats are coming off a record-setting weekend on the west coast in Tucson, Ariz. and Palo Alto, Calif. At the Stanford Invitational, the Cats set three school records in three separate distance events, including freshmen Collins Kiprop Kipngok, who was later named SEC Freshman of the Week, and Janet Jepkemboi Amimo breaking the UK men’s 3000m steeplechase and women’s 1500m records, respectively. Ed Bird later broke the UK record in the men’s 5000m event with a 13:39.28 time.

In Arizona, the Wildcats totaled nine event wins across the two-day meet, as well as eight school top 10 performance entries, including Annie Murphy (W Pole Vault), Miles Jones (M Long Jump), Julia Gunnell (W Heptathlon), Emmi Scales (W 100m H & W 400m H), Sharmelle Holmes (W 100m), Brayden Jackson (M Pole Vault) and the women’s 4x400m relay team.

The Cats also added seven school top 10 performance entries in Stanford, on top of the three school records, featuring Jack Pendergast (M 10000m), Noel Barlette (W 3000m Steeplechase), Jackson Watts (M 3000m Steeplechase) and Ally Kruger (W 5000m).

Now two weeks removed from their west coast trip, Kentucky currently stands at 19th on the women’s side and 27th on the men’s in the third checkpoint of the USTFCCCA outdoor rankings.

Events for the opening day of the Tom Jones Memorial Invite will begin tomorrow at 12 p.m. EST with Logan Coles competing in the men’s hammer throw final and conclude with the men’s 5000m event at 9 p.m. EST.
