Kentucky Second as Storms Halt Day One at Mountaineer Invitational
BRIDGEPORT, W. Va. – Kentucky men’s golf finds itself in second place after the opening day of play at the Mountaineer Invitational, hosted by West Virginia University at Pete Dye Golf Club (par 72, 7308 yards).
Kentucky stands at 1-over par as a team as storms stopped play on Monday, prior to the completion of the second round. The Wildcats trail only No. 4 Oklahoma State in the 18-team field, who leads the tournament at 16-under par. UK’s starting five made 23 birdies and an eagle on day one, while also carding a field-best 85 pars.
Kentucky junior Jack Schoenberger, who has finished inside the top 10 in each of his last three events, sits tied for second at 4-under par, powered by an opening round 66 (-6). Schoenberger made eight birdies and an eagle through his first 28 holes of play and trails the individual leader, Eric Lee of Oklahoma State, by just three shots. The native of Alpharetta, Ga. made an eagle on his third hole of the day, registering a three on No. 5 (par 5, 580 yards). He would proceed to make five birdies in a seven-hole stretch on Nos. 8-14 to get to 7-under through his first 12 holes. Schoenberger signed for 66 in the opening round and was the tournament leader after 18 holes. Four bogeys early in round two dropped the Belmont transfer out of the lead, but back-to-back birdies before the horn blew got Schoenberger back to 4-under par.
Freshmen Jacob Lang and Gavin Clutts join Schoenberger inside the top 10 with both players at even-par at day’s end. Lang made bogey on his very first hole of the morning but proceeded to birdie the next three to get into red figures. He would par the final eight holes of his opening round to card 72 (E) and remained even through 11 holes in round two. Clutts made just one birdie on his way to a 74 (+2) in round one but made three birdies in 10 holes during the second round, including back-to-back on holes Nos. 7 (par 3, 196 yards) and 8 (par 5, 504 yards).
Jacob Settles was UK’s fourth counting score for round one, finishing with a 3-over par 75. The freshmen closed his day with consecutive birdies on Nos. 11 (par 5, 604 yards) and 12 (par 4, 341 yards) and is tied for 33rd at 6-over total.
Jansen Preston and individual competitor Michael Hake are both tied for 40th at 7-over par, having completed 28 holes. Both players are 2-over par through 10 holes in their second rounds.
Play is scheduled to resume Tuesday morning at 8:45 a.m. with players completing their second rounds prior to beginning round three. Fans can follow the action with live scoring on Scoreboard powered by Clippd.
