Kentucky’s Tyler Bell Named SEC Freshman of the Week
Kentucky infielder Tyler Bell has been named the Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week, it was announced Monday. This is the first weekly honor of his career.
Bell, from Frankfort, Illinois in the greater Chicagoland area, continued his impressive rookie campaign and was a key cog in the Wildcats’ series victory at preseason top-ranked Texas A&M over the weekend.
Bell had multiple hits all three games and eight for the series. He also added a base knock in the Cats’ midweek game for a SEC-high nine total hits, in just 17 at bats, on the week. In College Station he belted a double in each game, homered in Saturday’s win during a 4-for-4 performance and drove in seven runs. His week nearly was even better as a potential go-ahead home run with two outs in the ninth inning of UK’s only loss to the Aggies was caught at the wall.
Highly touted upon his arrival, Bell has lived up to his advance billing. He is batting .347 with 28 runs, a team-best 10 doubles, five home runs, a team-high 31 RBI, five HBP and five stolen bases. He is slashing .347/.412/.594 and has reached base safely in 26 consecutive games to open his career. He has 11 total multi-hit and seven multi-RBI games.
Highlights from Bell’s week include:
Week: .529/.579/.882 slash, 9-17, 5 R, 7 RBI, 3 2B, HR, BB, HBP
