Kentucky Remains Inside Top Five at Schenkel Invitational
STATESBORO, Ga. – Jansen Preston led a strong back-nine effort as Kentucky men’s golf remained inside the top five at the Schenkel Invitational after a team score of 290 (+2) on Saturday at Forest Heights Country Club (par 72, 7,123 yards).
The Wildcats are tied for fourth with Notre Dame at 1-under par on the tournament with 18 holes remaining to decide the title. Host Georgia Southern leads at 12-under while No. 11 Florida and No. 12 Utah are tied for second at 11-under par.
Preston, a senior captain for the Wildcats, led UK on the day with a 1-under round of 71. It was the 11th round of par-or-better for Preston this season and was powered by three birdies on the back nine on No. 13, No. 16 and No. 18. The effort powered Preston up the leaderboard and into a tie for 25th.
Jack Schoenberger continued his stellar spring campaign with an even-par 72, his eighth consecutive round of par-or-better and 10th overall this season. The junior made a team-high six birdies on the day, offsetting a double-bogey and four bogeys. Schoenberger was able to capitalize on three of the four par 5s on the course and now owns a 4.38 par 5 scoring average for the tournament, tied for the third best in the field. He remains tied for 14th heading into the final round.
Freshman Jacob Lang followed up his 69 yesterday with a 73 on day two. Despite four bogeys on his card, Lang was able to make eagle on No. 18 (par 5, 600 yards) to end his round on a high note and carry some momentum into tomorrow’s final round, where he will start the day in a tie for 11th.
Gavin Clutts posted UK’s final counting score with a 2-over 74. Clutts registered his lone birdie of the day on No. 14 (par 4, 423 yards) and is tied with his teammate Preston in 25th place.
Both Jacob Settles and individual Solomon Petrie carded 6-over rounds of 78 on Saturday. Petrie, a redshirt sophomore, is tied for 54th at 6-over par while the freshman Settles sits T62 at 8-over.
The Cats continue to play the par 5s well with a team average of 4.65, the second lowest mark in the field behind only West Virginia. The team’s four counting scorers on Saturday were a collective 2-under par on Forest Heights’ back nine.
Florida’s Luke Poulter is the individual leader by three shots at 8-under par total.
The Wildcats will begin their final round with tee times from 9:15 a.m. to 9:51 a.m., playing with Notre Dame and Middle Tennessee. Live scoring can be found on golfstat.com.
