Wildcats Open Outdoor Season in Orlando at Black and Gold Invitational

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Just a week removed from the conclusion of the 2024-25 indoor season, the Kentucky track and field team is set to open the outdoor portion of its schedule, beginning with the Black and Gold Invitational in Orlando, Fla. on Mar. 21-22.

The Wildcats will send 54 athletes to Orlando to compete in this weekend’s event, including recently crowned NCAA Champion Carlie Makarawu. The Zimbabwe-native claimed his first career NCAA Division I title in Virginia Beach over the weekend in the men’s 200m final, breaking both his season best and the Kentucky school record with his 20.13 time. This weekend, Makarawu is set to compete in the 100m event on Saturday at 2:50 p.m. EST.

NCAA Indoor qualifiers Kate Powers, Luke Brown and representatives of the women’s 4x400m relay team will also be competing for the Cats this weekend.

The Black and Gold Invitational will serve as UK’s second official meet of the 2025 outdoor season, as the Wildcats competed in the Cumberlands Early Spring Meet on Mar. 14 in Williamsburg, Ky. The Cats finished fourth on the women’s side and ninth on the men’s.

From Orlando, Friday’s events will begin with Kate Powers and Shelby Wingler competing in the women’s hammer final at 11 a.m. EST. Saturday’s events will also open with Powers in the women’s discus final at 10 a.m. EST.
