Makarawu Ties NCAA Best, Wins 200m National Championship to Close Out Indoor Season

VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. – On the final day of the 2024-25 indoor season, the Kentucky track and field team earned its first gold medal of the competition, as well as two national scorers in the conclusion of the 2025 NCAA Indoor Championships in Virginia Beach, Va.

Overall, Kentucky placed 16th on the men’s side with 15 total points, in large part due to Carlie Makarawu’s gold medal in the men’s 200m to close out the event. The women’s team finished 50th in the team standings with two points.

The women’s 4x400m relay team, which featured Hannah Douglas, Cha’iel Johnson, Stacey Onyepunuka and Oneika McAnnuff, kicked off the final day of the national championships with a seventh-place finish and a time of 3:30.59. That time and placement earned the Wildcat quartet a national scorer honor and a First Team All-America selection.

Junior Luke Brown, who finished the season with the nation’s second-best distance, placed fourth in the men’s triple jump with a 16.33m/53-7 final mark. The finish also earned Brown a national scorer honor, as well as a First Team All-America selection.

After winning the preliminary event yesterday, the Makarawu’s legend continued into today, as the Zimbabwe-native secured the gold medal and the 2025 National Championship in the men’s 200m. His record time of 20.13 improved both his lifetime best and the UK 200m record, while also giving him a share of the NCAA lead with Auburn’s Makanakaishe Charamba, who finished second in today’s race.

Following the conclusion of another indoor season, UK track will now look to continue their success into the 2025 outdoor season, starting with the Black and Gold Relays on Mar. 21-22 in Orlando, Fla at the UCF Track and Soccer Complex.
