Men’s Golf Sits 10th After Day One at Desert Mountain Collegiate
SCOTTSDALE, Ariz. – Approximately halfway through competition at the Desert Mountain Collegiate, Kentucky men’s golf finds itself 10th among 17 teams upon the conclusion of play Saturday at Desert Mountain’s Outlaw Course (par 71, 7,107 yards).
With the shotgun start delayed due to rain and snow overnight, teams were only able to complete about half of their second rounds on Saturday. The Wildcats finished the day at 8-over par as a team, with Mississippi State leading the proceedings at 12-under for the tournament.
Play will resume on Sunday morning at 7:30 a.m. MST. Players will complete their second rounds before immediately beginning the third and final round.
Junior transfer Jack Schoenberger starred for Kentucky on day one. The Alpharetta, Georgia native is tied for 13th place at 2-under par, having completed exactly 27 holes. Schoenberger opened with a 1-under par 71 that featured five birdies, and was 1-under on his first nine holes in the second round before play was halted due to darkness.
Freshman Jacob Settles fired the best round of his collegiate career Saturday, carding a 3-under par 69 in round one. Settles birdied four of his first eight holes on the day to set the pace for the Cats early, and ended the first round in a tie for sixth individually. Three consecutive bogeys to start the second round brought the Winchester, Kentucky native back to even-par for the tournament, where he currently sits in a tie for 21st.
UK’s individual competitor this week, Michael Hake, performed well Saturday and is T29 among 96 competitors. Hake registered his second under-par round this season with a 71 to open play that included five birdies. He was 3-over through nine holes in round two before play was stopped.
Jansen Preston, a senior captain for the Cats, was even par in round one, marking his team-best 10th round of par-or-better on the 2024-25 campaign. While Preston was T28 after 18 holes, he dropped into a tie for 52nd after beginning his second round 6-over through nine holes. Preston made the lone eagle of the day for the Cats during the first round on No. 13 (par 5, 616 yards).
Oakley Gee, in the starting lineup for the second time this season, is tied with his teammate Preston at 6-over par. Freshman Jacob Lang made six total birdies on day one, but was derailed by three doubles and a triple-bogey. Lang will enter Sunday at 8-over par and in a tie for 68th.
