Georgia Amoore Chosen to The Dawn Staley Award Later Season Watch List

PHILADELPHIA – Georgia Amoore, University of Kentucky women’s basketball point guard, has been chosen to The Dawn Staley Award Later Season Watch List, it was announced by The Phoenix Club of Philadelphia.

The Wildcat is one of 17 players named to the watch list, which The Phoenix Club of Philadelphia established with the mission of recognizing the best guard in women’s basketball.

The Dawn Staley Award is given annually to a player who exemplifies the skills that Dawn Staley possessed throughout her playing career, including ball handling, scoring, her ability to distribute the basketball and her will to win.

Four finalists will be announced in March, and the winner will be selected the weekend of the Final Four in early April.

Through 24 games in 2024-25, Amoore is averaging 19.0 points, 2.4 three-point field goals per game and 7.2 assists per game. Her 7.2 assists per game are currently second in the nation but the most in the Power 4.

If the season ended today, Amoore’s 7.2 assists per game would break the more-than-four-decade-old, single-season school record, which is held by Pam Browning (7.14, 1982-83). Amoore, who has 172 assists total this season, also needs just 38 more assists to break the single-season school record. No Cat has even cracked into the top 10 since Amber Smith in 2009-10, while Amoore is currently seventh.

The Wildcat has scored in double digits in all but one game this season, while she has scored at least 20 points in 12 games this season. Moreover, she has knocked down at least three 3-pointers in 10 games, and she has dished out at least seven assists in 17 games.

In fact, she has produced 15 games this season with at least 15 points and five assists, which is more than any player in the Southeastern Conference since at least 2002-03.

Earlier this season, Amoore set the school record for most games with at least seven 3-pointers in a single season with three (Belmont, Mississippi State, at Oklahoma).

Her stats this season are even better in league action.

Through 12 SEC games, she is putting up 21.4 points per game, 2.6 3-pointers per game and 7.2 assists per game.

In league action, Amoore has recorded 257 points and 86 assists. Of her 86 assists, 46 produced a 3-pointer (138 points) and 40 produced a 2-pointer (80 points). Therefore, she has contributed – either by scoring or by assists – 52.2 percent of points in league action.

For her career, she is the only current DI player – men or women – to have at least 2,000 career points (2,310) and 800 assists (828). The Wildcat also is the third player in DI women’s basketball history to have at least 2,300 career points and 800 career assists, joining Caitlin Clark (Iowa, 2020-24) and Sabrina Ionescu (Oregon, 2016-20).
