No. 11 Kentucky Rolls Past Arkansas on Sunday
Five players scored in double figures as the 11th-ranked Kentucky women’s basketball team rolled past Arkansas 89-69 on Sunday afternoon at Historic Memorial Coliseum.
Georgia Amoore led the Cats with 19 points while also dishing out eight assists. Clara Strack had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds, while Teonni Key also accomplished the feat, with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Amelia Hassett and Dazia Lawrence each had 14 points for the Cats.
After struggling from behind the arc on Tuesday at Texas A&M, Kentucky had no such problems on Sunday. The Cats hit 13 of 27 from three-point range, with Hassett and Lawrence each making four triples.
Kentucky (17-2, 6-1 Southeastern Conference) scored the first 11 points of the game to build a significant early advantage. Amoore had four points during the stretch, but all five starters scored as part of the 11-point burst, which covered 2:30 on the game clock.
Arkansas (8-14, 1-6) would attempt to come back, and would get within seven on two occasions, including at 17-10. But the Cats closed the period on a 12-0 run, including a three from Key, another from Hassett, a layup from Clara Silva, a putback from Strack and a layup from Amoore to lead 29-10 at the end of the first quarter.
The Razorbacks scored the first two points of the second quarter, but the Cats responded with a 13-5 run to extend the lead. Lexi Blue had five points during the run, and Amoore and Lawrence each hit threes as UK built a 42-17 lead.
After Arkansas scored eight straight to cut the UK lead to 42-25, Amoore hit a fadeaway jumper to expand the lead to 44-25. The Razorbacks scored the final three points of the quarter, but UK held a 44-28 lead at the half.
The third quarter was basically even for the first four minutes. However, the Cats exploded with an 11-0 run, including a pair of threes from Hassett and one from Lawrence, to extend the lead to 64-39. Kentucky would make seven of 10 from beyond the arc in the period and would lead 77-53 after three quarters of play.
In the fourth quarter, UK would expand the lead to as many as 26 points. Arkansas fought back, getting within 19 on two occasions, but the Cats were able to cruise home with the victory.
Kentucky returns to action on Thursday, hosting nationally-ranked Alabama at Historic Memorial Coliseum. Tipoff is set for 7 p.m. ET and the game can be seen on the SEC Network.
