Big Blue Preview: No. 15/16 Kentucky Women’s Basketball Returns Home to Host Auburn

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 15/16 University of Kentucky women’s basketball program will play host to Auburn on Sunday, Jan. 12 at 3 p.m. ET in Historic Memorial Coliseum.

It will be Community Day, as the program aims to celebrate community and highlight those who make an impact in the greater Lexington area. Also, the 24-time National Champion University of Kentucky Cheerleaders will perform this year’s competition routine at halftime.

For Junior Wildcat Club members, there will be a Wildcat Squishmallow giveaway.

Moreover, season-ticket holders who have not picked up their bag tag can do so on the Lexington Avenue Concourse side this Sunday, too.

Big Blue Nation can still purchase single-game tickets to the game and all seven of the program’s remaining home games this season. To shop single-game tickets, click here. For a full list of the program’s Southeastern Conference promotional lineup, click here.

Darren Headrick will have the radio call for UK Sports Network, his eighth straight season as the voice of the Wildcats. His call will be carried on 630 AM WLAP (Lexington) and 790 AM WKRD (Louisville).

Big Blue Nation also can watch the game on SEC Network, with Sam Gore and Tamika Catchings on the call.

Kentucky returns home after knocking off a pair of Southeastern Conference teams in back-to-back road games. UK improved to 14-1 on the season, including 3-0 in the league. Just four teams remain undefeated through conference action thus far, including LSU, Texas, South Carolina and Kentucky. The Wildcats return to Historic Memorial Coliseum undefeated at home, boasting a 9-0 record in the $82 million renovated facility. It will mark their last game at home until Jan. 26, when it plays host to Arkansas.

Kentucky is coming off a win at Florida, 71-55, on Thursday, marking the first time in program history that UK has won each of its first three SEC games by at least 16 points each. In fact, it marked the first time UK has won any three consecutive SEC regular-season games by at least 16 points since 2013.

All five starters are averaging double-digit scoring, including Georgia Amoore (17.9), Clara Strack (15.3), Dazia Lawrence (14.1), Teonni Key (11.7) and Amelia Hassett (11.5). Amoore, Lawrence and Hassett also remain the only trio in the nation each with more than 36 3-pointers thus far in the season.

More than 66 percent of UK’s baskets this season have come off an assist. UK’s 19.7 assists per game are ranked second in the league and seventh in the nation. Amoore’s 7.2 per game lead the league and are tied for third in the nation.

Meanwhile, the Cats also are first in the SEC and sixth in the country in assist/turnover ratio (1.6).

Kentucky also boasts a tricky defense, holding Florida to 38.6 percent from the field. UK has held all three of its SEC opponents to under 39.0 percent from the field. Kentucky also forced Florida into a season-high 20 turnovers, 13 of those a season high in steals, as UK scored 25 points off those miscues.

Sunday’s game will mark the 56th all-time meeting between Kentucky and Auburn. Kentucky trails Auburn, 28-27, in the series, which began in 1980, while UK leads AU, 12-11, in games played in Lexington.

The Wildcats have dropped the last two meetings with the Tigers but won the previous eight straight. The last time the Wildcats defeated the Tigers was Feb. 27, 2022, winning, 90-62, in Memorial Coliseum.
