Kentucky Track & Field Continues Opening Week at Louisville Opener

LOUISVILLE Ky. – After a record-breaking outing by the distance crew last weekend, the rest of the Kentucky Track & Field team will make their 2024-25 season debuts on Wednesday, taking the track at the Louisville Opener. Held at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center in Louisville, the event will feature the Wildcats competing alongside competitors from Texas and Louisville. Competition is set to begin at 11 a.m. ET, with free admission to spectators.

37 men and 48 women comprise the 2024-2025 Track & Field roster, highlighted by defending SEC Indoor and Outdoor Triple Jump champion Luke Brown. Other All-Americans returning for the men include Shavique Bascus, Clinton Muunga, and Miles Jones. Tapiwanashe “Carlie” Makarawu, a transfer from New Mexico Junior College and Paris 2024 Olympic 200m finalist, leads 14 incoming freshmen and transfers for the Men’s team.

On the women’s side, returning All-Americans Kate Powers, Alexis Glasco, Payton Phillips, Oneika McAnnuff, and Cha’iel Johnson look to improve upon impressive 2024 campaigns. All-American Tesa Roberts and two-time OVC Championship MVP Aliyah Adams highlight a class of 18 newcomers.

At the distance season opener in Boston, a pair of record book entries were rewritten, as Ed Bird broke the school record in the 3000m and Collins Kiprop Kipngok set a new freshman record in the 5000m. Bird’s run also earned him a British U20 Record and moved him into third all-time among European U20 3000m runners.

Following the competition in Louisville, the program will break from competition for the winter holidays before returning for the brunt of the Indoor season in January. The Wildcats will play host in their next outing, competing in the annual Rod McCravy Memorial from January 10-11 at the Norton Healthcare Sports and Learning Center in Louisville.
