Logan Dorsey’s Penalty Kick Pushes Kentucky Past South Carolina to Advance to Sun Belt Semifinals

MORGANTOWN, W.Va. – Four-seeded Kentucky men’s soccer (6-5-6, 5-2-3 Sun Belt) survived and advanced to the Sun Belt Conference semifinals following a 1-0 defeat of five-seeded South Carolina (10-5-2, 5-5 Sun Belt) Sunday at the Dick Dlesk Soccer Stadium in Morgantown, W.Va.

Logan Dorsey’s successful penalty kick in the 65’ was the lone goal of the match to earn Kentucky the victory. The goal was his 13th of the season and fifth game-winning score. He is currently tied leading the conference in the category.

In the first half of the match, goalkeeper Casper Mols stopped a South Carolina penalty kick attempt in the 20′ to shut out the Gamecocks. The junior’s perfect execution notched a fourth win and second clean sheet to improve his season record improved to 4-3-3.

Kentucky and South Carolina hold an updated all-time series record of 13-8-4 (UK) with the first match between the programs taking place in 1991. In the 2024 regular season, the Wildcats defeated the Gamecocks on the road, 2-0. In the regular season, the match is historically dubbed the Southeastern Conference Men’s Soccer Championship as the two universities are the only two in the conference to sponsor men’s soccer.

The Wildcats dominated the Gamecocks in shots (11), corner kicks (14), and shots on goal (5). Kentucky will continue its conference tournament run on Wednesday against one-seed and host West Virginia at 7 p.m. EST. For the full updated tournament bracket, click here.
