Logan Dorsey’s Hat Trick Secures 5-0 Win over Coastal Carolina
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky men’s soccer (4-5-5, 3-2-2 Sun Belt) defeated Coastal Carolina (3-9-2, 1-4-2 Sun Belt) 5-0 in a Sunday night matchup at The Bell Soccer Complex. The win was the largest margin victory for Kentucky since 2022.
Senior Logan Dorsey recorded the first hat trick for the program since the 2022 season when Ben Damge scored three against Georgia Southern on Oct. 9. Damge became the first Wildcat to score three goals in a game since Tyler Riggs on Nov. 3, 2013 against Florida Atlantic. Dorsey became the 11th Wildcat in school history to record a hat trick in Sunday’s performance. Chris Soler has the school record having scored four vs. Georgetown on Oct. 17, 2001.
A foul on Coastal’s Jason Kimble set up an opportunity for Dorsey to take a penalty kick in the sixth minute. A ball to the bottom right of the net sailed past CCU’s goalkeeper, Tristan Himes, to get an early goal on the board for UK.
Following nearly 10 minutes of regulation, Dorsey scored again to earn a brace in the 16’ putting the Cats up 2-Nil. A Kentucky corner kick taken by Mateo Franzotti sent the ball to Martin Soereide in the box. His flick to Dorsey was celebrated by an epic golf swing on the sideline surrounded by his teammates for goal two of the night.
As the blue smoke began to clear, it was time to light another big blue bomb thanks to the evening’s third goal which was scored by Oliver Stavdal. The right-footed shot to the center of the net was assisted by Marqes Muir in the 18th minute. Stavdal’s goal was the second of his freshman season while Muir recorded his second assist. The score remained 3-0 for the rest of the first 45 before heading into the halftime period.
The second half of regulation was equally as eventful as Dorsey scored the first hat trick of his collegiate career. His third goal of the night was scored in the 64’ with a hockey assist from Nick Zielonka and Eric Onos giving Kentucky the 4-0 advantage. An unselfish play from Zielonka set Dorsey up to score within the penalty area.
The fifth and final goal of the night was scored by Soereide who recorded an assist earlier in the match. He was assisted by Zielonka, who tallied two back-to-back assists for the Kentucky offense, and freshman Victor Hansen. Hansen’s assist was the first of his Wildcat career. Soereide’s left-footed goal put the Cats up 5-0 over the Chanticleers as he scored his second goal of his senior season. Zielonka has now recorded two assists as a Wildcat.
The 5-0 final score was the first match for UK with five goals since defeating Georgia Southern 6-0 in the 2022 season. Dorsey’s hat trick raised his season total to eight goals scored while Onos is now second in assists with three for the Cats.
Kentucky and Coastal Carolina hold an updated all-time series record of 3-1-3 (UK) with the first matchup taking place in 2002.
