Kentucky in Hunt for Cullan Brown Title After Day One

by Greg Welsh

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The first day of the inaugural Cullan Brown Collegiate saw Kentucky put itself in contention for a title as the Wildcats’ “A” team ended the evening in second place at Lexington Country Club (par 71, 7,280 yards) with a score of 21-over par.

The onset of darkness prevented some groups from completing their second rounds on what was scheduled to be a 36-hole Monday, meaning round two will resume tomorrow morning at 9 a.m. Pairings will remain together and round three will begin immediately upon round two’s completion.

Hosting its first tournament since 2015, Kentucky sent out both an “A” and “B” team to compete in the 15-team field which totaled 84 golfers. The “A” team will begin Tuesday five shots behind the tournament leader, Kennesaw State, while the “B” squad is currently tied for sixth at 34-over par total.

Kentucky was led on the day by Solomon Petrie and Michael Hake, who are tied for second at 3-over par, individually. Petrie and Hake, who each still need to complete their second rounds, sit two shots back of the leader, Andrew Ferworn, of North Alabama. Ferworn is through 36 holes at 1-over par.

Other Wildcats inside the top 20 are freshman Jacob Settles, who is T-12 at 6-over, and Oakley Gee, who finds himself T-18 at 7-over par. Settles, who is making his collegiate debut this week, is through 36 holes and played his second round in just 2-over par with a pair of birdies on No. 4 (par 3, 172 yards) and No. 15 (par 3, 190 yards). He was one of just two players in the field to go under par on the par-3s for the day, boasting a 1-under total.

UK’s 10 players combined for 27 birdies on day one, paced by five from the redshirt sophomore, Gee. The “A” team was the top squad in par-4 scoring at 19-over total and also tied for the most pars in the field with 112.

Fans are once again welcome to attend the final day of competition at Lexington Country Club as Kentucky bids for its first team title since 2018. Live scoring will be available on Golfstat.com.
