No. 20 Women’s Soccer Heads to South Carolina on Sunday

LEXINGTON, Ky. – No. 20 Kentucky women’s soccer (8-0-1) will continue Southeastern Conference play this weekend traveling to Columbia, South Carolina to take on the Gamecocks (4-0-4) tomorrow afternoon. The match will kick off at 2 p.m. and will be televised on SECN+.

The Wildcats enter the match after a frustrating 0-0 draw with the Florida Gators (3-1-5) on Thursday night. It’s the first time the Wildcats failed to win a game this season and the first time the program has been held scoreless at home since October 15, 2023, in a 2-0 loss to Mississippi State during the regular season. Despite the disappointing result to open SEC play, the Wildcats remain nine games unbeaten in 2024.

Through nine games this season, Kentucky has outscored opponents 18-3 while outshooting them 163-45 with 61-11 shots on goal. While the offense has been firing on all cylinders, goalkeeper Marz Josephson and the defense have been stellar ranking in the top 10 in the country in goals against average (0.333). The team has collected six clean sheets so far this season and has a percentage of 0.667 ranking in the top 20 nationally.

South Carolina, a program that has flirted with the United Soccer Coaches Top 25 in recent weeks, is no easy opponent. The Gamecocks also have a lethal attack outscoring their opponents 21-7 this season. They enter the game after taking down a tough Georgia team on the road 2-1. The attack is led by fifth-year forward Catherine Barry, who leads the conference with eight goals and 19 points.

Sunday’s game will be the 29th meeting between the two programs. Kentucky has a 13-14-2 record all-time against the Gamecocks with a 6-8-0 away record. The last win on the road came on September 30th, 2011, when the Wildcats won 1-0.
