No. 20 Women’s Soccer Held to Draw Against Florida
LEXINGTON, Ky. – No. 20 Kentucky women’s soccer (8-0-1) drew Florida (3-1-5) 0-0 in its Southeastern Conference opener at Bell Soccer Complex tonight. Despite no goals, the Wildcats outshot the Gators 7-2 with just a single shot on the Gators’ goal.
Florida came in with a game plan to frustrate the Cats with a stubborn defense and that’s exactly what they did. The visitors were whistled 16 times for fouls to Kentucky’s eight with the head referee issuing only one yellow card to Florida’s Lauren Donovan in the match. With the persistent fouls, it was hard for Kentucky to build an attack on the Gators’ defense.
The best moment of the match for the Wildcats arrived in the 86th minute where Grace Phillpotts sent a bending cross in towards the back post. Florida goalkeeper Alexa Goldberg came out to try and pick it out of the air, but her effort was in vain as it sailed over her head to a sliding Grace Hoytink at the back post. Hoytink was not able to connect with the pass in the way she wanted to, and the shot attempt sailed wide of the empty net.
Kentucky collects a point from the opening night of SEC action and will now go on the road for just the second time this season as they take on South Carolina in Columbia on Sunday, September 22nd. Kick-off is scheduled for 2 p.m. and the game will be broadcast on SECN+.
Season tickets for all Kentucky soccer men’s and women’s home games can be purchased here, while single-game tickets are available here.
