Diallo’s Magical US Open Run Ends in Third Round
FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. – Despite a valiant effort against [14] Tommy Paul, Gabriel Diallo, a UK Men’s Tennis star from 2019-2022, was unable to continue his magical run in New York, falling 6-7 (5), 6-3, 6-1, 7-6 (3) in the Third Round of the US Open. Playing in only his second main draw of a Grand Slam, Diallo won three matches in qualifying to book his ticket into the prestigious field of 128 players and ended up with his first two career Grand Slam wins by the end of the week.
Diallo started the match strong, taking the opening set in a tiebreaker after the two players closed the set by exchanging six consecutive breaks of serve. The American, Paul, was able to find an early break in set two, which proved to be the difference. The tournament’s No. 14 seed would carry the momentum from the second set into the third, running away with the frame and claiming a two sets to one lead. Diallo surged at the beginning of the fourth, taking two breaks of serve off his opponent and holding a 40-15 lead in the set’s fourth game. However, Paul would come back to win the break, eventually tying the set and sending it to a tiebreak, where the 2023 Australian Open Semifinalist would ultimately claim victory.
Despite the losing result of Saturday, the Canadian Wildcat had a career week at the season’s final slam. As a result of his third round appearance, Diallo currently sits at No. 103 in the live ATP rankings, poised to debut a new career high at the conclusion of the tournament. He also will walk away with $215,000 in prize money.
Diallo will continue his 2024 season by representing Canada as a member of their Davis Cup squad. The Canadian team will play in the Davis Cup Finals Group Stage from September 10-15 in Manchester, England. The tournament’s No. 3 seed, Canada will take on Great Britain, Argentina, and Finland in a round-robin format, with the group’s top-two finishers advancing to the Davis Cup Finals. Diallo was a Davis Cup Champion in 2022 and has featured on Canada’s team each of the past three seasons.
