Alexis Holmes Makes Olympic Debut, Advances to 400m Semifinal
PARIS, France – Two more Kentucky Track and Field alumni took part in their first competitive events in Paris on Monday, as Alexis Holmes ran her first race on an Olympic track while Andrew Evans entered an Olympic discus ring for the second time in his career. Holmes finished second in her 400m heat to advance to Wednesday’s semifinal. Evans ended discus qualification in 17th place and did not advance to the Olympic final.
Holmes, making her Olympic debut, earned an automatic qualification spot of out the sixth and final heat of Round 1 of the Women’s 400m competition at Stade de France. Her time of 50.35 was good enough for the ninth fastest mark across all competitors. Already a World Champion in the Mixed 4x400m relay with Team USA, Holmes will look to advance to her first career Olympic final when she runs the 400m semifinal on Wednesday afternoon.
Evans, who made his Olympic debut in Rio in 2016, was unable to advance out of the discus qualification rounds to his first career Olympic final. His final mark of 62.25m came on his third and final attempt but was 0.63m short of the final qualifying spot. The 2014 Kentucky graduate finished in 17th place, one spot shy of his 16th place finish in Rio.
One Wildcat will take to the track on Tuesday, when Sydney McLaughlin-Levrone runs in her third career Olympic semifinal in the 400m hurdles. The defending Olympic gold medalist and world record holder will run in the second of three heats, with the top two finishers in each section, along with the next two fastest runners, advancing to Thursday’s final. The race is scheduled to begin at 2:07 p.m. ET and can be seen on NBC and Peacock.
