Laney Frye, Marissa Wenzler Selected to 2023-24 CSC Academic All-District Team

LEXINGTON, Ky. – University of Kentucky graduate golfers Laney Frye and Marissa Wenzler have been named to the 2023-24 College Sport Communicators Academic All-District Team.

The Nicholasville, Kentucky, native graduated with a Bachelor of Business in Administration in Management in May 2024.

Frye, a four-time All-American and four-time, school-record holder, concluded her senior season with a 71.0 stroke average on 10 tournaments and 29 rounds, which is the second-best, single-season stroke average in program history. That comes only behind her school record of 70.9, which she set last season in 2022-23.

Through her 29 rounds this season, 17 were par-or-better and 16 were better-than-par. Her 17 rounds of par-or-better are second most in program history, also only behind her school record of 20 that she recorded last season.

The All-Southeastern Conference First Team selection finished a career-best third place (-6) in the 65-person field at the 2024 SEC Tournament in April, as she led the field with 13 birdies for the event. In 10 tournaments this season, she finished in the top 20 on eight occasions, in the top 15 on six occasions, in the top 10 on five occasions and in the top five on three occasions.

She also made the cut at the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur in March, one year after being invited to the exclusive tournament for the first time.

Frye is currently playing the amateur circuit, with aspirations to turn professional.

Marissa Wenzler | Dayton, Ohio
The Dayton, Ohio, native graduated with a Bachelor’s Degree in Finance in May 2023 and a Master of Science in Kinesiology and Health Promotion in May 2024.

Wenzler recently won the most improved award at the program’s annual senior banquet. She concluded the season with a 73.3 stroke average through 10 tournaments and 29 rounds this season, which was a close third best on the team. She clocked three finishes inside the top 20, with one of those being tied for 10th place at the rigorous Ruth’s Chris Tar Heel Invitational in Chapel Hill, North Carolina, last October.

Wenzler, also the Kentucky women’s golf team captain, was named to the 2023-24 SEC Community Service Team in May. She collected nearly 50 hours of community service during her tenure at UK, donating her time to organizations like God’s Pantry, Operation Christmas Child, Kentucky Kids Belong and Patriot Praise.

Wenzler is currently playing professionally on the Epson Tour.
