Laney Frye Tabbed 2023-24 WGCA All-America Honorable Mention
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Laney Frye has been named a Women’s Golf Coaches Association All-America Honorable Mention selection, it was announced by the organization Friday.
Frye, a Nicholasville, Kentucky, native, concluded her senior season with a 71.0 stroke average on 10 tournaments and 29 rounds, which is the second-best, single-season stroke average in program history. That comes only behind her school record of 70.9, which she set last season in 2022-23.
Through her 29 rounds this season, 17 were par-or-better and 16 were better-than-par. Her 17 rounds of par-or-better are second most in program history, also only behind her school record of 20 that she recorded last season.
The All-Southeastern Conference First Team selection recently finished a career-best third place (-6) in the 65-person field at the 2024 SEC Tournament in April, as she led the field with 13 birdies for the event. In 10 tournaments this season, she finished in the top 20 on eight occasions, in the top 15 on six occasions, in the top 10 on five occasions and in the top five on three occasions.
She also made the cut at the 2024 Augusta National Women’s Amateur, one year after being invited to the exclusive tournament for the first time.
Frye currently holds four individual program records (single-season scoring average, single-season par-or-better rounds, lowest 18-hole round, career par-or-better rounds).
In the last round of her junior season in 2022-23, Frye set the school record on a 63 (-9) at the NCAA Pullman Regional in Pullman, Washington. Ironically, in the first round of her senior season in 2023-24, she set the second-best round of her career on a 64 (-7) at the Cougar Classic in Charleston, South Carolina.
The WGCA All-America Honorable Mention announcement marked her third All-America designation in the last two seasons after being named to the second team by the WGCA and the third team by Golfweek in 2022-23. Last season, she also was named a College Sport Communicators Academic All-America First Team selection.
Frye will be competing in her first tournament post-graduation next week at the Sea Island Women’s Amateur at Sea Island Golf Club from May 28-31.
