Women’s Tennis Faces Defeat in Knoxville
KNOXVILLE, Tenn. – Kentucky women’s tennis (8-13, 2-10 SEC) fell to No. 17 Tennessee (16-6, 8-4 SEC) on Friday at Barksdale Tennis Stadium in Knoxville, Tenn., 4-0.
The Wildcats battled through two and a half hours of play against the Volunteers before ultimately facing defeat.
Beginning the afternoon with doubles play, Tennessee claimed the point to have a 1-0 advantage. Court 2 was the first to finish as Ellie Eades and Zoe Hammond fell to No. 76-ranked Alana Wolfberg and Esther Adeshina, 0-6. The doubles point was clinched on Court 3 as UK’s Maialen Morante and Julia Zhu were defeated by UT’s Catherine Aulia and Lauren Anzalotta, 5-1. Court 1 was left unfinished as No. 55 Elizabeth Stevens and Makayla Mills were up 5-3 over No. 15 Elza Tomase and Sofia Cabezas (UT).
In singles play, Court 5 was the first to complete as Ellie Myers fell to Tennessee’s Adeshina, 1-6, 0-6. With a 2-0 advantage, the Volunteers quickly claimed another point with a win on Court 4. Aulia defeated Zhu, 6-3, 6-0. Tennessee clinched the match with a win on Court 2 as Tomase came out on top against Stevens, 6-3, 6-4.
In the matches left unfinished, Hammond was victorious in her first set against No. 18-ranked Cabezas on Court 1, 6-3. The match was abandoned in the second set with the score sitting at 5-4 UT. Court 3 saw a tough battle between Wolfberg and Eades with the score left at 7-6 (6-2), 3-2 UT. Court 6 was the third and final match left unfinished as Mills sat up one set, 6-3, to Anzalotta. The second set was abandoned at 5-2 UT.
The Wildcats will close the regular season on the road on Sunday at Georgia before looking to the Southeastern Conference Tournament held in Athens, Ga. next week.
