Women’s Tennis Sweeps EKU in Sunday Matchup
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky women’s tennis (6-3) defeated in-state rival Eastern Kentucky (6-8) on Sunday at the Hilary J. Boone Tennis Center sweeping the Colonels, 7-0.
The Wildcats began Sunday’s matinee winning the doubles point to secure a 1-0 advantage. Court 3 was the first to finish with Zoe Hammond and Ellie Myers defeating their Colonel opposition of Madison Hill and Izem Elif Olcer, 6-1. Court 2 clinched the point as the No. 41 nationally ranked pair of Lizzy Stevens and Makayla Mills came out on top 6-2 against Zhansaya Bakytzhan and Emmeline Polevoi. Court 1 was left unfinished as a medical timeout delayed play early in the set. Ellie Eades and Lidia Gonzalez abandoned play up 3-0 over Marilou Cote and Masha Fedenko.
Up 1-Nil, the Cats entered singles competition looking to earn a victory in the last non-conference match of the 2024 spring schedule. On Court 1, Stevens was the first to win her matchup against Fedenko, 6-1, 6-3, in nearly one hour of play. Hammond was not far behind with a win of her own on Court 4, sweeping Bakytzhan, 6-0, 6-0.
Needing one more point to clinch the match for Kentucky, Eades answered the call with a win on Court 3 over Polevoi, 6-2, 6-0. Myers was the fifth Wildcat to finish her match against Mariia Triska, 6-1, 6-0, to improve the overall score to 6-0. In the final battle of the day, Zhu overcame her EKU opponent, Olcer, 6-0, 6-3, for a 7-0 Sunday sweep.
The Cats will be back in action on Friday, March 1 as Southeastern Conference play is set to begin at Auburn.
