D.J. Wagner Named SEC Freshman of the Week for Third Time
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky men’s basketball guard D.J. Wagner was selected as the Southeastern Conference’s Freshman of the Week, it was announced by the league on Monday. The selection marks the 100th SEC Freshman of the Week honor for the Wildcats during the John Calipari era.
Wagner averaged. 12.5 points and 6.0 assists per game as UK earned victories over both Mississippi State and Georgia to improve to 14-3 overall and 4-1 in the SEC. The Camden, New Jersey, native posted his first-career double-double in the win over Georgia, tallying 18 points and a career-high 10 assists while going 8 of 12 from the field.
He helped lead the potent Wildcat offensive attack to 90 points against Mississippi State, the most MSU has yielded to an opponent this season, and 105 against UGA, UK’s first 100-point game in conference play since Jan. 15, 2022. The Cats have scored 90 or more points in four straight SEC games for the first time since 1994.
Kentucky has won more weekly SEC honors (131) than any other school during the Calipari era, including 100 SEC Freshman of the Week awards and 31 SEC Player of the Week honors. Wagner, has now won the honor an SEC-best three times this season, joining Reed Sheppard (twice) and Aaron Bradshaw as Wildcat freshmen to earn the distinction.
For the season, Wagner is averaging 12.8 points, 3.8 assists, 2.1 rebounds and 1.0 steals per game. He has scored in double-figures in 10 of 16 contests and registered at least three assists 12 times.
The Wildcats hit the road this week to take on South Carolina, Tuesday at 7 p.m. The game will air on SEC Network from Colonial Life Arena.
