Casper Mols Drafted to Atlanta United FC in 2024 adidas MLS SuperDraft
LEXINGTON, Ky. – Sophomore Casper Mols has been drafted by Atlanta United FC in the third round as the 77th overall pick of the 2024 adidas MLS SuperDraft.
“Excited for Casper and this opportunity,” said head coach Johan Cedergren. “Whether he decides to stay at Kentucky for another season or move forward with his professional career in Atlanta, we are really proud of him and this accomplishment.”
Since coming to Lexington last season as a freshman, Mols has not been a stranger to big time recognition. In his first year in the net for Kentucky, he saw First-Team All-America and First-Team All-Southeast Region honors. He was named Sun Belt Conference Goalkeeper of the Year, First-Team All-Conference, Sun Belt All-Tournament, and finished the 2022 match slate ranked No. 7 in the final Top Drawer Soccer Freshman Top-100.
In his sophomore season, the Aabrenaa, Denmark native was named Sun Belt Preseason Defensive Player of the Year, Preseason All-Conference, as well as listed on the MAC Hermann Trophy Preseason Watchlist and United Soccer Coaches Goalkeeper to Watch list. Mols was named to College Soccer News’ Men’s National Team of the Week and was a TopDrawerSoccer Team of the Week honorable mention following his back-to-back shutouts of nationally ranked No. 1 and No. 2.
Following two full seasons as a Wildcat, Mols saw action in 34 matches with 34 starts to tally 3,037 minutes in the net. In those contests, he recorded 91 saves and 14 shutouts for only 33 goals against. He currently holds a 19-7-8 record at the conclusion of the 2023 campaign.
The MLS SuperDraft, sponsored by adidas, expanded its eligible player pool in October allowing athletes who are currently collegiate sophomores, juniors and above to participate in the combine while maintaining their eligibility with the NCAA.
Previously, only players who were collegiate seniors and above, along with Generation adidas signees, were eligible for selection. College players will also still be able to sign Generation adidas contracts (freshmen and above).
A player who is drafted by an MLS club and has remaining college eligibility will have the option to return to school and further their development but will not be draft-eligible in the future. A selected player who elects to go back to college or remains unsigned will have their SuperDraft Priority held by the drafting club for approximately two years following the SuperDraft, culminating on December 31 of the second year.
However, a player with remaining college eligibility who appears on the draft-eligible list but is not selected in the SuperDraft may return to school and can be nominated for the following year’s draft.
