No. 23 Kentucky Edged by Georgia, 1-0, in Athens
LEXINGTON, Ky. – No. 23 Kentucky women’s soccer (8-2-5, 2-2-4 SEC) was defeated, 1-0, in a road match against the Georgia Bulldogs (8-3-4, 4-2-2 SEC) on Thursday night at the Turner Soccer Complex.
A goal from Georgia’s Summer Denigan in the 21st minute was the only scoring of the night as the Cats were unable to find an equalizer despite applying some second half offensive pressure. Denigan was assisted by teammate Hannah White on what was the fifth goal of the season for the redshirt freshman.
Fifth-year forward Jordyn Rhodes had both the shots on goal for UK, putting two headers on frame, each of which was stopped by Georgia goalkeeper, Jordan Brown. Kentucky netminder Marz Josephson made three saves on the other end of the pitch.
Kentucky earned five corners on the night, four of which came in the second half. The Wildcats had a final opportunity on a corner in the closing seconds but were unable to capitalize, with the full-time whistle blowing shortly thereafter. Shots were 15-7 in favor of UGA. The Bulldogs recorded four shots on goal to UK’s two.
A total of 19 Wildcats saw action on the night with Marz Josephson, Anna Young, Maggy Henschler and Grace Phillpotts all playing the full 90 minutes in the contest.
Kentucky returns home to face Missouri on Sunday in what will be the regular season home finale for the Wildcats. The match will start at 1 p.m. and air on SECN+. It will be fan appreciation day at the Bell with the chance for those in attendance to win Beats Solo 3 headphones.
