Swimming & Diving Brings Home Three SEC Weekly Awards

by Greg Welsh

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Kentucky swimming & diving’s Kyndal Knight, Sam Duncan and Ryan Merani all earned SEC Weekly awards for their performances at last week’s dual meet victory at Cincinnati, the conference announced on Tuesday.

Knight and Duncan were both selected as Diver of the Week, while Merani earned Co-Freshman of the Week alongside Georgia’s Sam Powe.

Knight and Duncan both set pool records at the Keating Aquatic Center during Kentucky’s dual meet sweep over Cincinnati last Friday. Knight won both of the day’s diving events, scoring a 335.48 on the 1-mtr to break an 11-year pool record by 12 points. Duncan, meanwhile, also nabbed a pair of wins, resetting the facility high score on the 3-mtr with a mark of 391.88 to shatter the previous standard which had stood for 14 years.

Merani, a freshman from Lutherville Timonium, Md., was victorious in the 200 fly, the first win of his collegiate career. The freshman swam a personal best time of 1:47.47 to win the event by more than four seconds. Merani also grabbed a runner-up finish in the 500 freestyle, giving him 13 points scored for the meet, a new career dual-meet high.

The award is the third Diver of the Week selection for Knight this year and her eighth all-time. For both Duncan and Merani, this week’s honors are the first of their collegiate careers.
