No. 8 Kentucky Begins Road Swing Against Miami in Oxford

by Chris Shoals

LEXINGTON, Ky. – The No. 8 Kentucky Softball team will embark on a four-game road trip beginning Wednesday at 5 p.m. ET against the Miami RedHawks from the Miami Softball Stadium in Oxford. The Wildcats currently sit at 19-2 overall, as the game against MU will mark their final game before Southeastern Conference play begins Friday at No. 3 Alabama.

Kentucky currently leads the NCAA in batting average with a .380 mark as a team, led by .493 mark from 2021 NFCA All-American, Kayla Kowalik. Kowalik is one of three players at UK who are hitting above .400, as she is joined by Lauren Johnson (.470) and Erin Coffel (.463) through the opening five weeks of the season.

Miami, who participated in the 2021 NCAA Lexington Regional, is sitting at 6-10 overall and also begins conference play in the Mid-American Conference this coming weekend against Kent State. Miami has played a terrific schedule, including two games against Texas and Alabama both.

Kentucky has won six games in a row against six different opponents since suffering its second loss of the season to Michigan earlier in March. In that six-game win streak, UK is outscoring its opponents 61-18 in that stretch.

In the circle for UK, the Wildcats have two pitchers with five wins on the year in Alexia Lacatena and Miranda Stoddard and also two more pitchers with three wins, in Stephanie Schoonover and Sloan Gayan. UK pitching is currently in the top 40 in the nation in earned runs average per game and has six pitchers this season with five or more appearances.

Miami went 42-10 a season ago and made it to the 2021 NCAA Lexington Regional, falling to Notre Dame in the opening game of the regional, and then to Northwestern in Saturday’s first elimination game.
