Renee Abernathy Named CoSIDA First Team Academic All-America

LEXINGTON, Ky. – Senior Renee Abernathy became the ninth Kentucky Softball player to be named a CoSIDA Academic All-American on Tuesday afternoon, as she was placed on the first team for 2022, a banner season for the Springfield, Illinois native.

Abernathy was the 2022 Southeastern Conference Scholar-Athlete of the Year, as UK won the conference-wide award for the fourth time in the last five seasons.

On the field this season, Abernathy hit .326 with 15 home runs and 51 runs batted in, ranking among the best numbers in the SEC. She had 38 runs scored, 47 hits, seven doubles, a triple and five stolen bases.

Abernathy had one of the biggest swings of the season for the Wildcats on May 21 as her three-run, seventh-inning home run against Keely Rochard of Virginia Tech launched Kentucky to a 5-4 lead to remain in the winners bracket to put UK into the regional final.

Additionally, the CATSPY Award for Student-Athlete of the Year for 2022 and maintains a 4.00 GPA in Human Health Sciences.
