No. 6 Kentucky Wins 2-0 at Old Dominion

NORFOLK, Va. – No. 6 Kentucky kept its spotless record intact with a 2-0 win over Conference USA foe Old Dominion on Friday at ODU Soccer Complex.

The Wildcats improve to 8-0-3 (2-0-3 C-USA), remaining undefeated through the season’s opening 11 games for the first time in program history. The Monarchs fall to 2-7-1 (0-4-1 C-USA).

A first-half stalemate extended Kentucky’s 167-minute scoring drought that dated back to the end of a 3-1 win over UAB on Oct. 3, but the Wildcats’ offense came alive in the second half to punctuate an overall scoring advantage of 19-4 on the season.

Both of Friday’s scorers secured the first goals of their careers. Junior defender Luis Grassow notched the game winner with a header to the back of the net off a corner kick from fellow defender Robert Screen in the 52nd minute. Sophomore midfielder Enzo Mauriz added one for good measure in the 74th with a left footer to the near post via the head of Martin Soereide and a cross from Screen.

Goalkeeper Jan Hoffelner recorded the seventh shutout of his lone UK season behind the backline of Grassow, Screen, Mason Visconti and Trey Asensio. All three of Hoffelner’s saves came in the first half, as the Cats held Old Dominion without a shot on goal for the final 54 minutes of action.

Kentucky will return home for its first non-league ranked matchup against No. 21 West Virginia (6-1-4, 0-1-1 Mid-American Conference) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. ET.
