Kentucky to Conclude Regular Season at South Carolina

COLUMBIA, S.C. – After kicking off its 2020-21 men’s soccer schedule seven months ago to the day, the University of Kentucky is set to conclude its regular season at the University of South Carolina on Saturday at 2 p.m. ET.

While the Wildcats and Gamecocks both compete in the sport as Conference USA affiliates, Saturday will serve as the de facto “conference championship” for the only two Southeastern Conference institutions who field varsity men’s soccer teams.

Kentucky heads to Columbia with a 10-4-2 (2-3-1 C-USA) record, coming off a 2-1 come-from-behind overtime win over Old Dominion in its home finale last weekend. Team captains Leon Jones and Marcel Meinzer each found the back of the net after a pre-match senior day ceremony honoring the former. Jones equalized the contest in the 87th minute, while Meinzer scored the golden goal in the final seconds of the extra period.

South Carolina enters Saturday with an identical C-USA record at 8-6-1 overall. After four straight matches without a win, the Gamecocks most recently got back on track with a 6-0 win over UAB on April 3 and a 3-2 win at FIU on April 10.

Kentucky has defeated South Carolina in each of the past three seasons, including a 4-0 shutout in the teams’ last matchup on Oct. 27, 2019.
