Kentucky Draws 1-1 at FIU

by Ellie Marcum

MIAMI – Kentucky (9-4-2, 1-3-1 Conference USA) and FIU (3-2-1, 2-1-1 C-USA) finished in a 1-1 draw on Saturday at Riccardo Silva Stadium. The result was the Wildcats’ second in double overtime and seventh to go beyond regulation this season.

Marcel Meinzer equalized just after halftime, giving Kentucky a quick return on starting the second half as protagonists. Meinzer scored his first goal of the season.

The first half was the sort of aggressive battle this C-USA fixture has proven to play out as in recent years. FIU was issued two yellow cards among 10 fouls in contrast to Kentucky’s four fouls. The Wildcats fired four shot with one on goal, while FIU’s lone shot on target was Matias Barraza’s 39th–minute goal.

Kentucky freshman defender Jalen Bigby saw the field for the first time in his career immediately following Barraza’s shot.

Kentucky came out of halftime with an intense offensive style of play, as the Wildcats recorded 14 shots with nine on goal, including Meinzer’s equalizer. He fired a rocket from the top of the box in the 49th minute.

Eythor Bjorgolfsson had the best chance of the overtime period, hitting the woodwork in the final minute on a breakaway.

Kentucky goalkeeper Ryan Troutman recorded five saves in the match, with nine shots faced.

The Cats’ final home match is scheduled for Saturday, April 10, against Old Dominion (1-1-3, 0-1-3 C-USA) at 11 a.m. ET.
