St. Hillaire Breaks 25-Year School Record in 400 Meters

by Jake Most

CLEMSON, S.C. – Dwight St. Hillaire broke the Kentucky indoor school record in the 400-meter run, highlighting several noteworthy performances Friday at Clemson’s Tiger Paw Invitational.

St. Hillaire covered the distance in 45.64 seconds, eclipsing a mark that had stood for a quarter-century — Arnold Payne’s 45.75 time from 1996. A senior from Trinidad and Tobago, St. Hillaire also owns UK’s outdoor record in the event at 44.55 seconds. He finished fourth overall in today’s race, which featured 43 competitors spread over 10 heats.

Kentucky posted three second-place finishes Friday:
Masai Russell was the top collegian, second overall, in the 60m hurdles at 8.09 seconds.  Already third place in school history, she remained in third while improving that mark by .02.
Abby Steiner finished second in the 60m dash with a person-best 7.21 seconds. Already fifth place in school history, she remains in that spot as she progressed that clocking by .01.
Lance Lang finished second in the 60m with a time of 6.72 after posting a 6.70 in the qualifier.

Josh Sobota  earned a third-place spot for Kentucky in the men’s shot put as he tossed 61’4.75″ (18.71m). Alison D’Alessandro was third in the women’s pole vault. She tied teammates Nicole Bagby and Siobhan Szerencsits – all of whom overcame 12’8″ (3.86m) — but D’Alessandro got the tiebreaker based on fewer attempts needed to clear the height.

Kentucky’s distance runners are in action Friday night in the Music City Invitational at Vanderbilt. Both groups will compete Saturday at their respective meets.
