by Tony Neely

COLUMBIA, S.C. – With a total that improved her standing as the third highest-scoring pentathlete in school history, Annika Williams finished in third place in the women’s pentathlon Friday at the South Carolina Invitational and Joseph Jardine is in eighth place in the men’s heptathlon with three events remaining Saturday.

As needed in the all-around athleticism demanded in the pentathlon, Williams placed in the top three, among the 14 competitors in the field, in three of the five events.  With a point scale for each event, the sophomore from Calvert, Texas, totaled a career-high 3809 points in finishing third overall.

Williams began the day with a sixth-place finish in the 60-meter hurdles with a time of 8.90 seconds, earning 931 points. She won the high jump by tying her personal best with a leap of 5’9.75″/1.77m, adding 941 points.  A third-place slot in the shot put (39’6.75″/12.06m) was a personal best – by more than a foot – and tacked on 665 points. A leap of 18’6.5″/5.65m in the long jump was second best of the day, providing 744 points. She concluded in 11th place in the 800m run (2:44.01), earning 528 points.

Jardine got his day started with second-place finishes in the 60m dash (7.13 seconds) and long jump (22’3.5″/6.79m).  He continued with eighth place in the shot put (37’4.5″/11.39m) and concluded with 5’8.1″/1.73m in the high jump, seventh place.  Overall, the junior from Mohrsville, Pa., is in eighth place with 2739 points and three events remaining on Saturday.
