Cats Sweep Auburn in Third Straight SEC Win

AUBURN, Ala. – After opening the weekend with the season’s first top-25 victory at No. 17 Alabama, No. 49 Kentucky kept the ball rolling with its third consecutive Southeastern Conference victory in a 4-0 sweep at Auburn on Sunday.
 
The Wildcats move to 12-5 overall with a 3-1 mark in league play. The Tigers drop to 9-10, 0-4 SEC.
 
“A very good weekend for us,” said head coach Cedric Kauffmann. “A 2-0 road trip in our conference is very rare and tough to do. The guys are competing better and better. We can play much better, and we know it, but we have to win ugly at times, and we are learning to do that.”
 
Kentucky began the day with quick work of doubles play, first with a 6-1 defeat of Diego Chavarria and Anders Fry by Millen Hurrion and Ying-Ze Chen. Soon after, César Bourgois and Liam Draxl clinched the opening point on the top court with a 6-2 win over Tom Wright and Finn Murgett.
 
Draxl carried that momentum into singles play, where he was the first to finish in a 6-1, 6-0 contest with Tim Dollman in the No. 1 spot. Kento Yamada beat Spencer Gray 6-0, 6-1 next, bringing the Kentucky lead to 3-0.
 
Kevin Huempfner clinched the winning point for the Wildcats with a second-set comeback, putting away Chavarria 6-1, 7-6(4) on court six.
 
Kentucky returns home on Friday for a matchup with Arkansas, scheduled for 6 p.m. ET at Hilary J. Boone Varsity Tennis Complex.
